Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski Will Retire After This Season

DURHAM, NC – The 2021-22 college basketball season will be the last for legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. Jeff Goodman is reporting he will be retiring at the conclusion of the season.

Better known as Coach K, Krzyzewski has led the Duke Blue Devils program since 1980. Through 40 seasons as their head coach, Coach K has led the program to a record of 1097-302, including five national championships. He will finish having coached the school for 41 seasons, making the NCAA Tournament in each season except for five.

Coach K took over Duke after coaching his alma mater at Army West Point from the 1975-1980 seasons. He compiled a 73-59 record at the school, and was hired by Duke on March 18, 1980. Prior to coaching at Army, Coach K joined the staff of his former coach, Bob Knight, at Indiana during the 1974-75 season. Krzyzewski played guard at Army from 1966-69.

Goodman is also reporting that there will be a meeting this afternoon to determine whether associate head coach Jon Scheyer will replace Coach K after this season. His source told him that “all signs point to Scheyer”. Scheyer was the lead recruiter on Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson.

Two other names that were under consideration were Johnny Dawkins, current UCF head coach, and Tommy Amaker, current Harvard head coach, per Goodman and Adrian Wojnarowski.

Coach K is regarded as one of the best coaches in the sport of all time. With this report, college basketball is officially ushering in a new era, with Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski no longer coaching, name, image and likeness rights coming to players so that they have a way to be compensated and the one-time transfer rule fully underway. Change is on its way.
